New Restaurants in Athens, GA: Your Fall 2026 Dining Guide

October 15, 2026

When Flagpole reviewed the new Cafe Racer on Oak Street, the reviewer's one real complaint was that the one-way driveway "ends at an exit where you can't turn left." Only a restaurant with a drive-through gets that complaint, and it fits the year. Most of what opened in Athens in 2026 is on the Eastside, on Atlanta Highway, or on Prince Avenue. Much of it opens before 7 a.m., hands food through a window, or sells something you can take home. Downtown's biggest change this year is a plaza.

That pattern answers a practical question for anyone who lives here. The new places closest to your house are probably the ones built for an ordinary Tuesday, and the downtown changes are better suited to a planned evening out.

The day now starts at 6 a.m. on the Eastside

Two of the year's openings start serving before most coffee shops unlock their doors.

Jake's Place opened in the Ansonborough development at 1040 Gaines School Road. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Its "local farm to table" label currently means a partnership with Market Fresh, a family-owned business in Statham that buys produce from small farms around Athens. Flagpole reported that the owners plan to source more locally over time.

The new Cafe Racer at 377 Oak St. also opens at 6 a.m. It stays open until 10 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, and it is closed Mondays. The business started as a small trailer at Arnoldsville Road and Highway 78 in Oglethorpe County, then added a food truck and a West Broad Street storefront. The Oak Street location adds things the earlier ones lacked: a full-service bar, large TVs for football season, a weekend "Howdy" special with $3 half shots, and the drive-through. A place that serves chorizo breakfast tacos at dawn and cocktails at midnight is covering every part of the day.

Farther out Lexington Road, The Jollof Place opened at 2826 Lexington Road as a West African grocery and restaurant. Plates are $25, with vegetarian, chicken, beef, fish and goat options. Like Dovetail Market on Prince Avenue, it is part restaurant and part store.

Atlanta Highway got drive-throughs and a familiar site

Coffee on the west side of town got faster this summer. 7 Brew Coffee opened at 3455 Atlanta Highway in early August. By mid-August, Dutch Bros was open a short drive away at 3131 Atlanta Highway, serving coffee, energy drinks, refreshers, shakes and smoothies. Counting Cafe Racer on Oak Street, three of the summer's openings have drive-throughs.

The year's biggest sit-down opening on this side of town went into a familiar spot. The Athens Banner-Herald reported that Ted's Montana Grill opened its first Athens location at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, at 196 Alps Road in Beechwood Shopping Center. It is the chain's 37th restaurant nationwide and 12th in Georgia, and the Banner-Herald described the site as having deep ties to the local restaurant industry.

Prince Avenue added a big dining room and a market

Prince Avenue's two openings are larger than anything on the Eastside, and both still serve neighborhood routines.

Ghavi's The Steak Place opened at the corner of Prince and Hawthorne avenues in the former Synovus Bank property. Owner Bahman "Dr. G" Ghavimi has been renovating and expanding the building since 2023, and local chef Mimi Maumus is senior executive chef. Flagpole calls the result Athens' largest restaurant space. Reservations are by phone at 762-246-3078 or 844-246-3078.

A few blocks toward downtown, Dovetail Market at 497 Prince Ave. replaced Birdies Market with a dining room plus a gourmet market. A glass door connects it to Lark Winespace next door, so you can order a glass of wine with your charcuterie. The market side sells ready-made sandwiches, single-serving charcuterie plates, and shelves of local products alongside imports. Flagpole's reviewer picked out the Bocadillo, made with Serrano ham, manchego and romesco on an Independent Bread Co. baguette. Dovetail is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Some longtime places changed their schedules this summer too. Hendershot's is now open on Mondays after summer renovations. Foxglove PlantBar added a full cocktail bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Daily Groceries Co-Op now scoops locally made ice cream every day from 2 to 4 p.m.

Downtown swapped tenants and built a plaza

Downtown had openings in 2026 too, but its changes are about replacement and public space.

In July, Flagpole reported that the downtown Barberitos on East Clayton Street would close at the end of the month and that Bad Moon, also on East Clayton, had held its final night. On East Broad, Pompeii took over the former DePalma's space at 427 E. Broad St. It was already open by the time the Banner-Herald reported on it in April, so it's this year's news but not this fall's. The menu was developed with chef Matt Palmerlee of The National. Flagpole's review singled out the mortadella pie, with pistachios baked under the cheese.

The newest downtown spots are small. Queen Tea at 151 E. Broad St. faces North Campus from a small patio under a large ginkgo tree. It is the fifth location of a chain that started in Kennesaw. Flagpole counts at least 10 Athens businesses that list bubble tea as a main offering. Queen Tea stands out with a self-serve ramen bar: 45 packaged bases and all-you-can-eat toppings for $6.99. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight. Sunroof Coffee Downtown at 198 College Ave. sits down a short flight of stairs facing College Square. It sells beans from regional roasters in Atlanta and the Carolinas, and its pastries come from Independent Baking Co. Those stairs are the only way in, which Flagpole flagged for anyone concerned about accessibility.

The square Sunroof faces is downtown's biggest investment of the year. Athens-Clarke County and the Athens Downtown Development Authority started the College Square Redesign on Jan. 28, 2026. The plan was to open the space between East Broad and East Clayton before the Sept. 5 home opener, with final completion expected by October. The project costs about $6.5 million and is funded mostly by the ADDA through financing and parking revenue, plus $500,000 from TSPLOST 2023. New features include lighting, tables and chairs, benches, shade sails, and large trees in planters. The county says the space was designed for live music, artisan and farmers markets, pop-ups and street festivals. Flagpole called the square "newly renovated" on Oct. 6. No official sign-off on final completion has been published yet.

Hours side by side

Comparing hours is where the pattern is easiest to see. The table lists hours as reported by Flagpole. Hours change, so check with each business before you go.

Place Address Part of town Format Hours as reported
Jake's Place 1040 Gaines School Rd. Eastside Full-service, all day Daily, 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
Cafe Racer 377 Oak St. Eastside Bar, drive-through 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun, Tue–Thu; 6 a.m.–midnight Fri–Sat; closed Mon
Sunroof Coffee Downtown 198 College Ave. Downtown Coffee counter 7 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m.–4 p.m. weekends
Dovetail Market 497 Prince Ave. Prince Avenue Market plus dining Tue–Sat, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
Queen Tea 151 E. Broad St. Downtown Bubble tea, ramen bar Daily, 10 a.m.–midnight
Pompeii 427 E. Broad St. Downtown Italian, full bar 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Sun–Mon, Wed–Thu; 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri–Sat; closed Tue

The two earliest openers are both on the Eastside, and both are among this year's newest places. The downtown newcomers have hours closer to a college schedule, ranging from Sunroof's morning-to-afternoon window to Queen Tea's midnight close.

What's announced but not open yet

Several more openings have been announced for fall. None of these could be confirmed open as of Oct. 12, 2026:

  • Henri's Bakery & Deli, 1573 S. Lumpkin St., in the former Five Points Subway. The Banner-Herald reported in August that the Atlanta-based bakery was targeting fall 2026 but had not announced a date.
  • The Bagel Hole, 1660 S. Lumpkin St. in Five Points. Flagpole reported the planned move in August, but the company's locations page does not yet list an Athens shop.
  • Mirin Fusion Kitchen, 2375 W. Broad St., Suites O and P, in the Briarcliff development. It appeared on an Oct. 1 county plans-review notice for an interior buildout. That same notice lists an interior upfit for Super Chix at 1000 W. Broad St.

Two of these are in Five Points and two are on West Broad, so the pipeline also sits outside downtown. Terrapin Beer Co. is moving the other way on production but keeping its local presence: its parent company is shifting large-scale brewing from the Newton Bridge Road facility starting Sept. 25, and the Athens taproom stays open for beer, live music and community events.

For the latest on all of this, Flagpole's weekly food column remains the most reliable place to check whether Henri's has opened its doors on Lumpkin.
